Why Phi Delt?
Social
Your four years on the Hill are more than just hitting the books and late night cram sessions in Hoover. Every college student needs time to relax, and Phi Delta Theta can fill the void. Our social calendar is unmatched offering a number of date parties, bar nights, and formals. Phi Delta Theta offers a weekly poker night, paintball outings, and participation on one of the winningest intramural teams at McDaniel. Phi Delta Theta is truley the balance between academics and social life. Working hard and Playing hard on the Hill since 1971!
Academics
Academics are the root of your college experience. Continuing to learn inside and outside the classroom is very important since it will only open doors to a successful future after you leave the hill. Each class you encounter at McDaniel has been tackled by a member of Phi Delta Theta. New Members have the opportunity to seek guidance and tutoring from older members. Our Clubroom offers a bank of collected exams and quizzes to be used as study guides for members. During exam time, the clubroom is a great enviorment to study and get work done.
Philanthropy
The brothers feel fortunate enough to have the opportunity to give back to the community whether it be their time or money. Once a month we clean the mile long stip of MD-97, our adopted highway. Twice a year we help out at the Carroll Arts Center and particpate in their Annual Christmas Wreath Auction by donating the Buy-8-Phis Wreath. In addition to other various service related projects, we sponsor the annual Bowl-A-Thon for our Balls raising money for the Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation. Finally, we are actively invovled in raising awarness and money for the ALS Association, which aids in the fight of Lou Gehrig's disease.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Rush / Recruitment?
Rush is the time when Fraternties seek new members to join. It is a time when interested McDaniel students have an opportunity to visit each Fraternity and compare what each has to offer.
If I take part in Rush, do I have to join a Fraternity?
Rush is a time to show interest in what Fraternity life can offer. Attending Rush events or registering for Rush information does not commit you to joining a Fraternity.
Are all Fraternity members a bunch of elitists, conformists, and cliquish?
Of course not! These generalizations have stumped Fraternity members for years because so many of our members come from a variety of backrounds. The truth is that anyone can be a member of a Fraternity at McDaniel.
How much time does it take to be in the Fraternity?
Like any organization, it all depends on how much time you wish to put into it. For basic purposes, an officer of our organization should expect to spend 5-8 hours a week with the Fraternity. A committee member can expect 3-5 hours a week. An average member can expect 1-3 hours a week. This time is spent in chapter meetings, committee meetings, service activities, socials, intramurals, etc.
What is Phi Delta Theta's stance on Hazing?
We view hazing as unproductive, ridiculous, and hazardous. This bogus custom has no rightful place in the Fraternity system. While social behavior cannot be legislated, a Fraternity without morally sound precepts and practices is not a constuctive influence upon college men. Phi Delta Theta has zero tolerance for such behavior.
I'm interested, but still not sure...
That is what Rush is about! It is a time for you to see if joining a Fraterntiy is right for you. The Student Activities and Greek Life Office can answer any of your questions.
