Lapkowicz heading to ELI...
Emerging Leaders Institute, more commonly known as ELI, is being held from July 28-30th at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Joe Lakowicz will be representing Maryland Beta at the conference this year. "I am excited to attend in order to develop the necessary skills to lead our chapter in the future since my pledge brothers and myself are the next generation," explains Joe. With no rising juniors in the chapter the sophomores will be thrown into executive positions in the spring. Chad Marth does not worry because, "conferences like ELI, Presidents Leadership Conference or Recruitment Boot Camp are great tools to prepare these young guys for the challenges ahead. We have no reservations about the leadership for the chapter after we graduate."
The Emerging Leaders Institute was created for that exact reason. By bringing the up and coming freshman and sophomore leaders from chapters across the United States and Canada, a Phi Delt learning laboratory will be created where one will be able to learn leadership skills from ones peers and distinguished alumni. Joe is a little disappointed the chapter did not have the financial resources to send a couple more brothers but then again that could be one of the chapter goals for next year!
Summer Begins...For some brothers the beach beckons. For the older brothers the office calls.
Brothers Austin Miller and Sean Urbany hit Ocean City every weekend. These weekend warriors say they work all week then hit the beach to relax. Sean states, "OC is only about 3 hours away so after work Friday we make a made dash to the Eastern Shore." The summer gives many young college students the chance to get away. Dewey Beach tends to be the hot spot. "Its been a long first year on the Hill and I can't think of a better way to spend the summer," explains Austin.
While the younger brothers are living the dream, the older ones are getting a taste of life after college. Joe Barndt finds himself working for Lutheran Financial learning the ins and outs of the insurance business. Ryan Quillen gains experience at Ferris Baker Watts in Baltimore while Andrew Dreschler networks throughout Maryland as a Sales Associate for Salesforce One. All three finally realized it was time to prepare for life after graduation. Quillen responds, "We have all done the partying and relaxing at the beach for the summer but its time for us to get our a$$ in gear because believe it or not the real world is right around the corner." Do not let these guys fool you though, Rafael's Tiki Bar just opened up so they still have plenty of time to take a break to enjoy their summer.
